Every year Parsons has a competition with Saga Furs where students submit fur accessory designs and four people are chosen as semi finalist. I submitted my project a few weeks ago and this tuesday I got a email saying I was chosen as a semi finalist and my design was going to be produced. I could not believe it because this competition grants the winners an amazing experience. I will now be placed with a fur factory to help me produce the accessory that I designed and after it is complete I must submit it to Saga Furs along with the other three semi finalist. Then Saga will choose two winners and send them to their headquarters in Denmark to teach them various fur techniques. Those two winners also will be funded by Saga to use fur in their Senior thesis. This is an amazing opportunity and I am so grateful to Saga for selecting me. I can not wait to begin working on producing my design and hopefully moving onto the next round. I will keep everyone posted!
My little cousin Hanadi is 11 years old and she is the strongest person I know. She was born with physical disabilities but she is completely cognitive. She has to sit in a wheelchair, has a feeding tube in her stomach and a trach in her neck. She can’t be around anyone who has a slight cold or she will end up in the hospital with pneumonia. We come from a huge family with a lot of kids and she cant run around and play with them she is forced to sit back and watch. And last week she was taken into surgery to have her entire back broken and repieced together because a hump was forming on her back from not being able to hold herself up straight. I can’t imagine how she feels and what she goes through. She is 100% normal mentally but she cant move( I would go insane). She can speak normally and she has the best sense of humor shes is always cracking jokes and making us laugh. This past forth of July I decided to do something special for her and make her feel like a star for a day. I went to the local fabric store and got her the red white and blue printed fabric shown in the photo and made her a dress then I came to her house and painted her nails, did her hair and makeup and helped her pick out shoes to match and we all went out to our family BBQ. She looked beautiful and so happy and she loved the fireworks. I hope she knows how much she means to our family and how big of a impact she has made on all of us. Shes my firework <3
This summer Anthropologie was opening in the shopping center in my town and I applied for a position to help set up the store. I was really excited to hear that I got the temporary position and we started on the ten day process of setting up the store. The visual managers had me working on a lot of my own special project for the store because I was the only person there who knew how to sew. I was really excited to be a part of this because store set up is extremely important for any design house to sell their products and I learned a lot from Anthroplogie. They ended up hiring me onto the staff past the temporary position and I became a sales associate. I loved working in the fitting rooms because I got to help style looks for customers and give them advice on what I thought looked best. The images are two of the displays I created and they are still on display in the Crocker Park store.
Whenever I get stressed or need a break to think about why I’m putting myself through all the stress that comes along with fashion I go to Central Park. It gives me a chance to breathe and remember why I love Fashion Design so much and why I fought so hard to get here. When I used to visit NYC I thought it was magic now that I live here and I’ve grown up a little more I can see that its not. BUT Central Park is still my little piece of magic and I think it will always be. I don’t think most people understand what I’m trying to say here unless you have a place of your own that makes you feel that way. Where the possibilities are endless and inspiration just runs through you each time you are there. Its good to have a little bit of magic in your life when most of your life is made up of deadlines and people criticizing you and your ideas. Its good to free yourself every onceinawhile.
Flight club has one of the most amazing in store displays I have ever seen. Everything is lined up perfectly and in color order it makes you want to sit there all day and just look at each individual sneaker. I love that its the same basic idea but put into hundreds of different color ways making it possible for people to find something that is unique to them and their style.
This summer while helping out at my uncles restaurant I ran into this guy. He is a frequent customer and he is a biker. He made his pants and vest entirely out of denim swatches and patches. I like how rough and raw everything is and its even well designed (hes attached a bottle opener). My favorite image is of the inside of the vest because I LOVE imaging this big biker sitting in his home with a needle and thread trying to sew these swatches together and that picture explains it perfectly because you know his wife isn’t the one sewing it for him. Its just a reminder there are creative people everywhere….even in my little Cleveland Ohio<3
My roommate Ashley from Sophomore year came back to visit for a weekend because she was selected to attend the Teen Vogue Fashion University! She said it was a great experience and she got to meet so many people from the industry and they gave her some really helpful advice. She was allowed to bring one guest to one of the events so we went to a private shopping event at H&M. It was great seeing her again and catching up and we got mini burgers and tiramisu!
Bergdorf Goodman always has the best holiday windows and this year is no disappointment. Each window has a beautiful mannequin surrounded by detailed animal statues and a monochromatic color palette on its own. My favorite part of the windows in the luscious vibrant fur (especially the red).
Alice’s Teacup has become a favorite breakfast spot for my roommate Rachel and I. We have now been to Chapter 1 on the West Side and Chapter 3 on the East Side. As a self-declared omelet pro I have to say they make the best omelets I’ve had so far. The scones are also delicious (my favorite is the buttermilk) and a side of bacon tops of my meal. They have many teas to choose from depending on what you are in the mood for. And they also have delicious hot chocolate that comes in a HUGE Alice’s Tea Cup mug. The only thing I wish was different about this place was the decor. Alice in Wonderland has so many whimsical, creative ideas and I expected the restaurant to really play on that but other than a few wall paintings and photos I didn’t really feel the magic of Alice.
